CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the study

Language is very important in communication. It is used to express one’s needs and desire to convey one’s message in the spoken and written form. We know that each nation from their own language, which is different from others. From this condition we have considered one international language which can be used by people all over the world that is English. It is used to communicate with people from another countries.

English, as we know, has been the first foreign language in Indonesia since several year ago. English is very important in the world because through this language we know the contents of scientific books, news paper, magazine, or song are written in English. English most important for us to learning English.

The main objective of learning English is student should be able to communication English. Student are expected to develop their communication skill that make student costumed to express their thought, ideas, felling, and experience. Thought English text, spoken or written.

English as the second language, vocabulary is so many and take a great position in teaming a language. Vocabulary is an essential component of language so it is so important to find how to master it effectively. There is more attention to master vocabulary even students have devoted much time to vocabulary mastery but the result have been learned. Especially in countries where English is not the main language of communication so students must have a way to get best solution in mastering vocabulary.

Listening to English song as an alternative way in learning vocabulary, Students are given something new and different from they usually get in class. They are not only as the^, object of learning process but at so the participants. Listen to English songs will increase student activity that will make students have fun in learning English. If student like to listening English song, they try to memorize the lyrics and song it. Absolutely their vocabulary increased according to how many song that they will listen latter.

B. Reason for choosing the topic

The reasons why the researcher chooses “the correlation between vocabulary mastery and listening English songs a case of S.MA Negeri 1 Batang in the academic years 2008/2009, as topic can be stated as follow :

1. The music can be effectively to learned vocabulary in the class.

2. English song is mostpopular in the word as we know. Song is the universal language,

3. The researcher wants to make student are interested in studying vocabulary through listening English song. The writer will choose the song that familiar to their car. lie will find the English song with easy word and kind of music is trend now, so the students will be interested in listing to English song

C. Statement of the problem

Based on the background of the study above, this study was totally on finding the answers to these questions :

To what extent is the vocabulary mastery of the second years students in SMA Negeri l Batang.
To what extent is the frequency of listening to English songs of the second year students in SMA N 1 Batang.
Is there any^, significant correlation between vocabulary Mastery and listening English songs a case of SMA Negeri 1 Batang.

D. The objective of the study

The objective of the study as follow:

To find out vocabulary mastery of second year students in SMA Negeri 1 Batang.
To know the frequency of listening to English song of the second year student in SMA Negeri 1 Batang.
To find out whether there is significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and listening English songs a case of SMA Negeri I Batang.

E. Significances of the study

The writer hopes that after this study has, been completed, it would give some valves for writer himself; for the teacher, for the students of SMK N 1 Batang and, for the institution.

1. The writer

The writer gets same experiences and knowledge from the research.

2. The teacher

The teacher get some teaching strategies for learning the student from this research.

3. The student from of SMA Negeri 1 Batang

The result of this research is students have to develop their vocabulary with listening the song and they interesting to practice the English song and they, can studied vocabulary from the fun atmosphere by listening the English song.

F. Definition of key terms

Bellow are the definitions on each word of the thesis topic :

1. Correlation

Correlation is the power to affect some body's action, characters or beliefs, especially by providing example for them to follow, winning their administration or making them afraid of the disagree (.Hornby, 1995 : 611).

2. Listening

Listening is an active cognitive process that requires conscious attention to relate sound to meaning (Bromkey, 1992 : 164)

3. Song.

Song is one of the most concentrated expression or felling or ideas in musical form ('The World Book Encyclopedia, 1996: 521).

English song is the most popular in the word. Teacher uses it to attract the student learning English because students is familiar the English song and like to song it.

4. Vocabulary

Vocabulary is (range of) words known for, or used by, a person in a trade, profession and so on (Hornby; 1983 : 959).

5. - Mastery

Mastery means complete control knowledge or great skill (Oxford Pocket Dictionary, 1994 : 766).

- Vocabulary mastery

Vocabulary mastery means the ability of the students to master vocabulary especially word which is show by the result of the students score.

6. The second sears students

The phrase the second years students refer to the students who have been studying in SMA Negeri 1 Batang for two years.

7. SMA Negeri 1 Batang

SMA Negeri l Batang is the institution is which the object of study and where the writer conducts her research. It is located on Jl. Ki Mangunsarkoro No. 8 Batang 51121 telp…..

THE IMPORTANCE OF READING

Reading is important thing to do. But, reading habit is poor among Indonesians because people haven’t realized the importance of reading.

Reading is importance to increase to knowledge .

By reading, we can know the word . we will understand what we haven’t known yet. We can read anything, includes the lines of the paragraphs in on article contain pieces is knowledge. So, valuable books in libraries and bookstores mean nothing if they are not read.

Realizing the importance of reading will make some one motivated to read.

When we know that something is very importance because it can give us valuable information, we will try to get or do something, by reading, we can know about latest information’s or news.

By reading we can spend or leisure time.

If we haven’t anything to do, we can read to spend our leisure time there are many things which can be read such as magazine, newspaper, novel, etc and also, we needn’t special place to read, because we can read in everywhere like in the room, park, bus, and train station.

Reading is a good thing society in the word especially in Indonesia should develop this good habit. Beside that, we will be faced the tighter competition. So that, if we don’t like to read we will be left behind.

The fox and the vineyard

A hungry fox went out, for looking for the food. He walked along the country roads and came to a vine yard. Of course he wanted to get inside, but he could not do so, because there was a high wall all round the place. He tried to climb over the wall, but it was too high.

He walked around the wall and at part one, he saw a hole, ah, he though “now I can get inside”. He began to push himself through “there is only one thing for me to do” he said at last “I must become thinner”. For whole day and still he didi not become thin enough. At the and of the third day, he found that, he could get through the hole.

At last he was inside the vineyard and could eat the fruit. The grapes were and he ate as many as he could. He ate until he could eat no more. The he went back to the hole and tried to get through. But alas! He could not do so, he was now too fat.

poor fox! There was only one thing for him to do now. He had to stay in the vineyard with the fine fruit all around him, and be hungry three whole days. At the end of that time he because thin enough to get through the hole.

When finally he was walking away from the vineyard he looked back and said : “oh vineyard! vineyard! How fine you are and how sweet is your fruit! But of what use are you? “I went in hungry and I came out in hungry, too”.

Do you know how many cigarettes are people buying in a day? In the world, a thousands of people spend hardly uncountable packs of cigarettes. It is a serious problem for the government to surpass it. Because, there are many disadvantages which caused by smoking.

Smoking can damage the healthy.

Many illness can caused by smoking, such as lung cancer and asthma. The smokers have a great chance to infect lung cancer, especially the heavy smokers, because they suck many danger toxin from the ingredient of cigarettes, like nicotine and tar which caused lung cancer or asthma.

The steam of cigarettes can caused air pollution when the smokers began to smoke, they have made air pollution in around them. Because, the steam of cigarettes will loose to the air and contaminate it.

Smoking can disturb the passive smokers

The danger of smoking not only to active smokers but also passive smokers. When the active smokers smoke beside the passive smokers, the steam of his cigarette will be suck by them. So, they also have chance to infect the illness like the active smokers such as lung cancer or asthma which shouldn’t they have.

Cigarette make someone do the crime

After someone start taking smoke, he want to have more. Although, the price of pack cigarette not too expensive, but if it is be done more and more, it will be a serious problem. When he have no money, whereas he is extremaly want to smoke, he haven’t another way except do a crime, like steal money, so that he can smoke again. After that he will become a criminal

Smoking can cause the death

When the smokers consumed one cigarette, they has made their life shorter. Whereas, a smokers is always want to smoke more and more. So, it can imagine, how shorter the life of the heavy smokers are!

It is not going to be easy to surpass problems which are caused by smoking. But, th goverment can decrease the disadvantages of smoking by giving the society some information about negative effect which can be caused by smoking.

Re: Character Reference - Jeremy Swanson

The purpose of this is to provide a character reference for Mr. Jeremy Swanson whom I have known as a classmate, roommate, and friend for a period of five years.

I first met Jeremy in our freshman year at Adirondack College. We were both studying a general arts program there and became acquainted through a number of common classes that we shared. By second year, we had become friends and decided to take an off-campus apartment together. We shared that living arrangement until we both graduated last year.

Accordingly, having gotten to know Jeremy so well over the past few years, I believe puts me in a position to provide you with a pretty accurate assessment of his character.

As a student, Jeremy was a hard-working and highly committed to his education. I believe that his excellent transcripts will attest to that fact. In addition, he was quite involved in a number of extra-curricular activities including the track and field team and the school newspaper. In fact, in his last two years he was Assistant Editor of the "Campus Inquirer." Outgoing, and always willing to help someone out, Jeremy was very popular with his fellow students.

As a roommate, Jeremy was a great choice. He was very neat and tidy at all times and he liked things in the apartment to be kept orderly. He made a point of cleaning his own room and the common living areas on a regular basis. He socialized occasionally at home but was always respectful of my needs, and he and his guests kept the noise down and ended their activities at a reasonable hour.

As a friend, Jeremy Swanson is a standout. He is a loyal, honest, considerate, and supportive individual who has the ability to see and understand things from another person's perspective. He is a great direct communicator and knows how to raise and discuss common living issues and problems in a non-threatening manner. He is hyper-sensitive and is always tuned into how another person might "feel" in a given situation. He likes to have fun too. During our years at school we maintained an ongoing friendly rivalry on the squash courts.

To tell the truth, I really can't think of anything of consequence on the negative side of the personality ledger when it comes to Jeremy. All in all, I would have to say that Jeremy Swanson is a fine, well-balanced person with an abundance of positive qualities.

Dialogue, Introspection and Narrative, Scene and Summary

1) Question:

What is a good percentage mix of Dialogue, Introspection and Narrative? Is there a good mix, or is it just what fits the story? Suspense romance writer -Florida

Answer
A story unfolds in scene, of course. And, scene is usually made up of dialogue and always action. But the dialogue I'm talking about is dialogue that advances the plot, NOT dialogue that is mere information dumping.

Introspection can give insight into the inner workings of the character, but is inherently flat and thus slows the plot. Therefore introspection should be used sparingly. This also goes for narrative. Telling--summary--puts distance between the reader and the story. Showing--in scene--draws the reader deeper into the story. Use "telling" sparingly.

" Mr. Hare rides on Mr. Fox's back, and Mr. Fox goes down the lane. Mrs. Goose is coming up the lane. Mr. Hare sees Mrs. Goose and says, "Look, Mr. Fox is my donkey. I'm riding on his back."

Mr. Fox quarrels with Mr. Hare. "I'm not your donkey." Mr. Hare says, "Don't quarrel with me. You are my donkey. Look, I am riding on your back."

Description of Trigonia.

The mantle-lobes are rounded and plaited, to correspond with the ribs of the shell. The edges of the mantle are marked with white spots; posteriorly, opposite the anus they are provided with short convex appendages. The mantle-lobes are disunited throughout, not joining until they reach the upper surface of the posterior adductor, some distance above the anus.

The gills are somewhat triangular, extending backwards almost horizontally on each side of the visceral mass. Each gill is formed of three stems, fixed at one extremity, free and pointed at the other, and giving attachment throughout their whole length, on one side to depending filaments, which become shorter as they are more posterior. The filaments are formed of a tubular horny thread, supporting on one side a broad membranous fringe. I could perceive no trace of vessels in this fringe, but it appeared to be covered by an epithelium (ciliated ?).

The mouth is placed at the anterior and superior part of the animal, between two thickish horizontal lips. The labial tentacles are two on each side, rather long, lanceolate, and slightly pectinated. The anus is placed posteriorly and superiorly between the gills, and just above the posterior adductor muscle.

The so-called "foot" is composed of two portions, an upper and [8] quadrilateral (properly the abdomen), and a lower pointed part (the true foot), the two being set at right angles to one another.

The first portion is sharp-edged and slightly pectinated posteriorly, marke by a groove bounded by two folded lips anteriorly. The second portion is slightly pecitnated along its lower edge, pointed anteriorly, prolonged behind into a curved process, where it joins the superior portion.

Visceral mass.–The mouth opens by a very short œsophagus into a wide pyriform stomach, surrounded by a dark dendritic liver. The stomach narrows into a long intestine, which descends for the whole length of the abdomen, and forms one or two loops in the substance of the generative gland; then passes up again above the stomach, penetrates the heart, and passing between the two small lateral muscles of the foot, terminates in the anus.

Adverbs of Place

away, everywhere, here, nowhere, somewhere, there etc

A. If there is no object, these adverbs are usually placed after the verb.

She went away.

He lives abroad.

Bill is upstairs.

But they come after verb + object or verb + preposition + object

She sent him away.

I looked for it everywhere.

(But see chapter 38 for verb + adverb combinations such as pick up, Pig down etc.)

Adverb phrases, formed of preposition + noun/pronoun/adverb, follow the above position rules:

The parrot sat on a perch.

He stood in the doorway.

He lives near me.

But see also E below.

B. somewhere, anywhere follow the same basic rules as some and any:

I've seen that man somewhere.

Can you see my key anywhere? - No, I can't see it anywhere. Are you going anywhere? (ordinary question) but

Are you going somewhere? (I assume that you are.)

Nowhere, however, is not normally used in this position eicept in the expression to get nowhere (= to achieve nothing/to make no progress):

Threatening people will get you nowhere. (You'll gain no advantage by threatening people.)

But it can be used in short answers:

Where are you going? - Nowhere. (I'm not going anywhere.)

It can also, in formal English, be placed at the beginning of a sentence and is then followed by an inverted verb:

Nowhere will you find better roses than these. (See 45.)

C. Here, there can be followed by be/come/go + noun subject:

Here's Tom.

There's Ann.

Here comes the train.

There goes our bus.

here and there used as above carry more stress than here/there placed after the verb. There is also usually a difference in meaning. Tom is here means he is in this room/building/town etc. But Here's Tom implies that he has just appeared or that we have just found him. Tom comes here means that it is his habit to come to this place, but Here comes. Tom implies that he is just arriving/has just arrived.

If the subject is a personal pronoun, it precedes the verb in the usual way:

There he is.

Here I am.

Here it comes.

But someone and something follow the verb: there's someone who can help you.

Note that the same sentence, spoken without stress on There, would mean that a potential helper exists. (See 117.)

D. Someone phoning a friend I may introduce himself/herself by name + here:

ANN (on phone): Is that you, Tom? Ann here or This is Ann. She must not say Ann is here or Here is Ann.

E. The adverbs away (= off), down, in, off, out, over, round, up etc.

Can’t followed by a verb of motion + a noun subject:

Away went the runners.

Down fell a dozen apples.

Out sprang the cuckoo.

Round and round flew the plane.

But if the subject is a pronoun it is placed before the verb:

Away they went.

Round and round it flew.

There is more drama in this order than in subject + verb + adverb but no difference in meaning.

F. In written English Adverb phrases introduced by prepositions (down, Wm, in, on, over, out, of, round, up etc.) can be followed by verbs :indicating position (crouch, hang, lie, sit, stand etc.), by verbs ca motion, by be born, die, live and sometimes other verbs:

From the rafters hung strings of onions.

In the doorway stood a man with a gun.

On a perch beside him sat a blue parrot.

Over the wall came a shower of stones.

The first three of these examples could also be expressed by a participle and the verb be:

Hanging from the rafters were strings of onions.

Standing in the doorway was a man with a gun.

Sitting on a perch beside him was a blue parrot.

But a participle could not be used with the last example unless the shower of stones lasted for some time.

Adverbs of Time

A. afterwards, eventually, lately, now, recently, soon, then, today, tomorrow etc. and adverb phrases of time: at once, since then, till (6.00 etc.)

These are usually placed at the very beginning or at the very end of the clause, i.e. in front position or end position. End position is usual with imperatives and phrases with till:

Eventually he came/He came eventually.

Then we went home/We went home then.

Write today. I'll wait till tomorrow.

(For lately, recently, see also 185.)

With compound tenses, afterwards, eventually, lately, now, recently, soon can come after the auxiliary:

We'll soon be there.

B. before, early, immediately and late come at the e id of the clause:

He came late.

I'll go immediately.

But before and immediately, used as conjunctions, re placed at beginning of the clause:

Immediately the rain stops we'll set out.

C. Since and ever since are used with perfect tenses (see 187 D). since can come after the auxiliary or in end position after a negative ac; interrogative verb; ever since (adverb) in end position.

Phrases and clauses with since and ever since are usually in end position, though front position is possible:

He's been in bed since his accident/since he broke his leg.

D. yet and still (adverbs of time)

yet is normally placed after verb or after verb + object:

He hasn't finished (his breakfast) yet.

But if the object consists of a large number of words, yet can be before or after the verb:

He hasn't yet applied/applied yet for the job we told him about.

still is placed after the verb be but before other verbs:

She is still in bed.

yet means 'up to the time of speaking'. It is chiefly used with the negative or interrogative.

still emphasizes that the action continues. It is chiefly used with the affirmative or interrogative, but can be used with the negative to emphasize the continuance of a negative action:

He still doesn't understand. (The negative action of `not understanding' continues.)

He doesn't understand yet. (The positive action of `understanding' hasn't yet started.)

When stressed, still and yet express surprise, irritation or impatience. Both words can also be conjunctions (see 327).

E. just, as an adverb of time, is used with compound tenses:

I'm just coming. (See also 183)

(For just as an adverb of degree, see 41.)

Adverbs of Frequency

(a) always, continually, frequently, occasionally, often, once, twice, periodically, repeatedly, sometimes, usually etc.

(b) ever, hardly ever, never, rarely, scarcely ever, seldom

A. Adverbs in both the above groups are normally placed:

1. After the simple tenses of to be:

He is always in time for meals.

2. Before the simple tenses of all^-other verbs:

They sometimes stay up all night.

3. With compound tenses, they are placed after the first auxiliary, or, with interrogative verbs, after auxiliary + subject:

He can never understand.

You have often been told not to do that.

Have you ever ridden a camel?

Exceptions

(a) used to and have to prefer the adverb in front of them:

You hardly ever have to remind him; he always remembers.

(b) Frequency adverbs are often placed before auxiliaries when these are used alone, in additions to remarks or in answers to questions:

Can you park your car near the slaps? - Yes, I usually can.

I know I should take exercise, but I never do.

and when, in a compound verb, the auxiliary^- is stressed:

I never can remember.

She hardly ever 'has met him.

Similarly when do is added for emphasis:

I always do arrive in time!

But emphasis can also be given by stressing the frequency^- adverb and leaving it in its usual position after the auxiliary:

You should always check your oil before starting.

B. Adverbs in group (a) above can also be put at the beginning or end of a sentence or clause.

Exceptions

always is rarely found at the beginning of a sentence/clause except with imperatives.

often, if put at the end, normally requires very or quite:

Often he walked.

He walked quite often.

C. Adverbs in group (b) above, hardly ever, never, rarely etc. (but not ever alone), can also be put at the beginning of a sentence, but inversion of the following main verb then becomes necessary:

Hardly/Scarcely ever did they manage to meet unobserved.

hardly/scarcely ever, never, rarely and seldom are not used with negative verbs.

D. never, ever

never is chiefly used with an affirmative verb, never with a negative. It normally means 'at no time':

He never saw her again.

I've never eaten snails.

They never eat meat. (habit)

I've never had a better flight.

(For never + comparative, see 21 C.)

never + affirmative can sometimes replace an ordinary negative:

I waited but he never turned up. (He didn't turn up.)

never + interrogative can be used to express the speaker's surprise at the non-performance of an action:

Has he never been to Japan? I'm surprised, because his wife is Japanese.

ever means at any time' and is chiefly used in the interrogative:

Has he eve r marched in a demonstration? - No, he never has.

ever can be u ed with a negative verb and, especially with compound tenses, can often replace never + affirmative:

I haven't ever eaten snails.

This use of ever is less common with simple tenses.

ever + affirmative is possible in comparisons (see 21 C) and with suppositions and expressions of doubt:

I don't suppose he ever writes to his mother.

Order of adverbs and adverb phrases of manner, place and time when they occur in the same sentence

Expressions of manner usually precede expressions of place: He climbed awkwardly out of the window.

He'd study happily anywhere.

But away, back, down, forward, home, in, off, on, out, round and up usually precede adverbs of manner:

He walked away sadly.

She looked back anxiously.

They went home quietly.

They rode on confidently. (See also 36 E.)

here and there do the same except with the adverbs hard, well, badly: He stood there silently but They work harder here.

Time expressions can follow expressions of manner and place: They worked hard in the garden today.

He lived there happily for a year.

But they can also be in front position:

Every day he queued patiently at the bus stop.

Sentence Adverbs

These modify the whole sentence/clause and normally express the speaker's/narrator's opinion.

A. Adverbs expressing degrees of certainty

(a) actually (= in fact/really), apparently, certainly, clearly, evidently, obviously, presumably, probably, undoubtedly

(b) definitely

Adverbs in group (a) above can be placed after be:

He is obviously intelligent.

before simple tenses of other verbs:

They certainly work hard.

He actually lives next door.

after the first auxiliary in a compound verb:

They have presumably sold their house.

at the beginning or at the end of a sentence or clause:

Apparently he knew the town well.

He knew the town well apparently.

definitely can be used in the above positions but is less usual at the beginning of a sentence.

perhaps and possibly are chiefly used in front position, though the end position is possible.

surely is normally placed at the beginning or end, though it can also be next to the verb. It is used chiefly in questions:

Surely you could pay £I?

You could pay £1, surely?

Note that though the adjectives sure and certain mean more or less the same, the adverbs differ in meaning.

certainly = definitely:

He was certainly there; there is »o doubt about it.

But surely indicates that the speaker is not quite sure that the statement which follows is true. He thinks it is, but wants reassurance.

Surely he was there? (I feel almost sure that he was.)

B. Other sentence adverbs

admittedly, (un)fortunately, frankly, honestly`, (un)luckily, naturally`, officially` etc. are usually in the front position though the end position is possible. They are normally separated from the rest of the sentence by a comma. Starred adverbs can also be adverbs of manner.

Honestly, Tom didn't get the money. (Sentence adverb. honestly here means 'truthfully'. The speaker is assuring us that Tom didn't get the money.)

My Lovely Home

My house is only a five minute-walk from school.

It is not very big, but very cozy and quiet. This is the place where we can relax and find our own space. In our home, we really enjoy our relaxing time from the pressure of school and work.

It has a nice and warm living room. There is a beautiful painting of scenery hanging on the wall. My father is a keen gardener. He puts some pots of indoor plants near the door. In a low cabinet, you will see the trophies, pictures of my family, small toys, and some books.

I am lucky to have a room to myself. I paint the wall olive green. It's my favorite color. There is a desk. I do my homework there. I also put a portable radio-tape there.

The kitchen is my mother's domain. My mother keeps it clean all day. There is a blue wall cabinet in it. It harmonizes with the grey wall tiles. However, only few Will give my home a second glance. Still we are very proud of it. It may not be a perfect one but, all the same, it is home sweet home.

Taman Mini Indonesia indah

About 9 kilometers from Jakarta, there is a part called Taman Mini Indonesia Indah. It is very famous now in English, this means “Beautiful Indonesia in Miniature”.

These is a large lake in the middle of the park in the middle of the lake, we can see the island of Indonesia in miniature. The orchids garden around the lake also beautiful.

In taman mini we can also see house from different parts of Indonesia for instance, there is Dayak house, Minangkabau house and Toraja house. We can also visit shop which it sells souvenir from all over Indonesia. There are also restaurant where visitors can buy food and drinks.

People who came to taman mini can either walk around the park or get on train. On all days of the week, we can see foreign tourist in taman mini Indonesia indah. “During week – ends and holidays, we can also see thousand of Indonesia.

A magazine is usually well illustrated. A good illustration will attract the readers to buy it. Unlike a news paper, a magazine is printed on a thicker and more expensive than a news paper. It is also completed with full colored pictures. A picture will deepen the impression of the readers on certain news. Yuliana an old friend of mine, Is a girl of medium height. She is very good looking, too, with long black hair and attractive brown ayes.

Yuliana lives not so far away from my house. She is a computer programmer and works for a big software company in Jakarta. She always drives to work. She leave her house at 07.00 am and finishes work at 4.00 pm.

Yuliana does not like cooking very much and she hates doing the housework. What are her hobbies? She likes reading detective stories and collecting stamps. She also loves playing the piano on weekends. One a day she would like to join a famous piano concert in her city. I hope her wish will come true.

Coconut

Coconut is a common name for the fruit of tree of the palm family. People usually call the tree coconut palm. Coconut grow well in tropical countries. They can grow up to 30 m high. They have a single cylindrical trunk. At the top of the trunk, there Is a crown of leaves. The leaves are long. They are about 3 to 4,5 m long.

The fruit grows in clusters. In one cluster there are about 10-20 coconut. The fruit is oval and about 30 cm long. It has a thick husk and a hard shell. Inside the shell there is white oily meat. There is also a sweet fluid.

Coconut palms are very useful plants. People can use every part of the tree in their lives. they dry the coconut meat into copra. After that they can get oil from it and use in the daily cooking or make it into soap or candles. People can also make rope and doormats from the coconut’s husk.

Zeus and the Jack Daw

Once upon a time, Zeus, the most important got in ancient Greece, decided the bird should have a king. Well, he told them the would choose the most handsome bird to their leader or course, all the bird wanted to win, didn’t they? They flew away to the river. the chattered and washed there. Beside, they made their feathers smooth with their beaks.

Nor. Let me tell you about the jack Daw, well, he wanted to be a king, but he knew Zeus would not choose him. You know why? yeaahh….. because his feathers were too dull. But, he had an idea. I tell you what. When the other bird left, he quickly picked up the feathers they had dropped. The, he attached them to his own.

The golden snail

Once upon a time there was an old widow. Her name was Mbok Rondo Dadapan. She was very poor. Her job was looking for the fish along the river. The river was not far from her hut.

One day, she found a golden snail. She took the snail home and put it in the jar in her kitchen. She kept the snail well and feed it enough food.

Several days later, after coming back from her daily fishing, she found delicious meal on the table. Her hut was clean. And this happened almost every day for a long time.

The one day, she did not go fishing. But she peeped from outside of her hut. She saw a beautiful princess going out of the jar where she kept the golden snail. The princess prepared the meal and cleaned the hut.

The princess was surprised when Mbok Rondo Dadapan came in and asked, “Who are you?” so the princess told her life and was willing to be Mbojk Rondo Dadapan’s Daughter.

Finally she did not become a golden snail anymore. She become a beautiful girl.

Bandung Bondowoso and Roro Jongrang

(The Lagend of Prambanan Temple)

Once, there was a beautiful Javanese princess. Whose name was Rara Jongrang. Rara Jongrang whose beauty was very famous in the land was the daughter of Prabu Baka, an evil king.

One day, a handsome young man with supernatural power named Bandung Bondowoso defeated and killed Prabu Baka. On seeing princess Rara Jongrangs beauty, Bandung Bondowoso fell in love with her and wanted to marry her.

Meanwhile, princes Rara Jongrang felt sad due to her death father. She did not want to marry Bandung Bondowoso he killed her father. But she was also afraid of Bandung. So to refused politely she made a conditions. “I will marry you but you have to build one thousand temples in one night as a wedding gift”, requested Rara Joggrang. Bandung agreed with the condition.

At once, the princess turned into a statue. Knowing this, Bandung Bondowoso regretted and he went away into a far land. From then people called the temple Prambanan temple and the princess statue Rara Jonggrang statue.

Thumbelina

There was once a women who wanted a small child but didn’t know where to get one. So she went to a witch for a help.

“A little child?” said the witch. “That’s easy, here a magic seed, plant it in a flower pot and see what happens!”

The woman thanked the witch, paid her with a piece of silver, and went to plant the magic seed. As soon as it touched the soil, the seed grew into a tulip, whose flower opened with a pomp in the middle of the flower sat a tiny girl.

“Why, the pretty little thing is handily as big as my thumb!” cried the woman I am going to call her Thumbelina”.

The woman made Thumbelina a bed from a walnut shell. Instead of going out, Thumbelina played on the kitchen table. Her favorite game was sailing across a bowl of water in a boat made from tulip leaf. As she sailed, she sang in a high, sweet voice.

The Wicked Crocodile

A long time ago there lived a crocodile in a river. It become good friends with an old monkey. Which live on the top of a tree on the river bank.

One day the Crocodile could not find anything to eat. He felt very hungry. He suddenly remembered his good friends the Monkey. He went to visit his friend.

On seeing the Crocodile, the Monkey asked “How are you today? O…. Mr. Crocodile? Where are you going?”

“I am going to look after my wife who is in do come to my house,” said the Crocodile and pretended to cry.

The Monkey set on the Crocodile’s back as he swam to wands the middle of the river. Once there, the crocodile lowered his back into the water.
