To Whom It May Concern:

Re: Character Reference - Jeremy Swanson

The purpose of this is to provide a character reference for Mr. Jeremy Swanson whom I have known as a classmate, roommate, and friend for a period of five years.

I first met Jeremy in our freshman year at Adirondack College. We were both studying a general arts program there and became acquainted through a number of common classes that we shared. By second year, we had become friends and decided to take an off-campus apartment together. We shared that living arrangement until we both graduated last year.

Accordingly, having gotten to know Jeremy so well over the past few years, I believe puts me in a position to provide you with a pretty accurate assessment of his character.

As a student, Jeremy was a hard-working and highly committed to his education. I believe that his excellent transcripts will attest to that fact. In addition, he was quite involved in a number of extra-curricular activities including the track and field team and the school newspaper. In fact, in his last two years he was Assistant Editor of the "Campus Inquirer." Outgoing, and always willing to help someone out, Jeremy was very popular with his fellow students.

As a roommate, Jeremy was a great choice. He was very neat and tidy at all times and he liked things in the apartment to be kept orderly. He made a point of cleaning his own room and the common living areas on a regular basis. He socialized occasionally at home but was always respectful of my needs, and he and his guests kept the noise down and ended their activities at a reasonable hour.

As a friend, Jeremy Swanson is a standout. He is a loyal, honest, considerate, and supportive individual who has the ability to see and understand things from another person's perspective. He is a great direct communicator and knows how to raise and discuss common living issues and problems in a non-threatening manner. He is hyper-sensitive and is always tuned into how another person might "feel" in a given situation. He likes to have fun too. During our years at school we maintained an ongoing friendly rivalry on the squash courts.

To tell the truth, I really can't think of anything of consequence on the negative side of the personality ledger when it comes to Jeremy. All in all, I would have to say that Jeremy Swanson is a fine, well-balanced person with an abundance of positive qualities.

Sincerely,

Charles Farmington

Passive Sentences

Passive Sentences

Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. It is not important or not known, however, who or what is performing the action.

Example: My bike was stolen.

In the example above, the focus is on the fact that my bike was stolen. I do not know, however, who did it.

Sometimes a statement in passive is more polite than active voice, as the following example shows:

Example: A mistake was made.

In this case, I focus on the fact that a mistake was made, but I do not blame anyone (e.g. You have made a mistake.).

Form of Passive

Subject + finite form of to be + Past Participle (3rd column of irregular verbs)

Example: A letter was written.

narative dialog

Dialogue, Introspection and Narrative, Scene and Summary

1) Question:

What is a good percentage mix of Dialogue, Introspection and Narrative? Is there a good mix, or is it just what fits the story? Suspense romance writer -Florida

Answer
A story unfolds in scene, of course. And, scene is usually made up of dialogue and always action. But the dialogue I'm talking about is dialogue that advances the plot, NOT dialogue that is mere information dumping.

Introspection can give insight into the inner workings of the character, but is inherently flat and thus slows the plot. Therefore introspection should be used sparingly. This also goes for narrative. Telling--summary--puts distance between the reader and the story. Showing--in scene--draws the reader deeper into the story. Use "telling" sparingly.

Mr. Fox and Mr. Hare (story)

Mr. Fox and Mr. Hare

One day, Mr. Fox comes to Mr. Hare's house and says, "Come with me quickly, Mrs. Goose has eggs: Come and see them.

Mr. Hare says, "No, I won't go, I'll sit here."

"You are lazy," Mr. Fox says.

"Yes, I'm lazy," Mr. Hare says.

Mr. Fox says, "Could you sit on my back and ride?"

Mr. Hare is happy: "I will ride on your back.

" Mr. Hare rides on Mr. Fox's back, and Mr. Fox goes down the lane. Mrs. Goose is coming up the lane. Mr. Hare sees Mrs. Goose and says, "Look, Mr. Fox is my donkey. I'm riding on his back."

Mr. Fox quarrels with Mr. Hare. "I'm not your donkey." Mr. Hare says, "Don't quarrel with me. You are my donkey. Look, I am riding on your back."

Then Mr. Fox jumps and throws Mr. Hare from his back, and Mr. Hare falls on the ground.

Mr. Hare goes quickly and hides himself in a hole in a tree. It is not a big hole. Mr. Fox comes to the hole and sees Mr. Hare in the hole.

Mr. Fox says, "I'll catch you, Mr. Hare."

"Come in and catch me," says Mr. Hare.

Mr. Fox can't go into the hole. Mr. Fox is big, and the hole is small.

Mr. Fox says, "I'll go to my house and get an axe. Then I'll come and make the hole bigger with the axe."

Mr. Fox says to Mrs. Goose, "Mr. Hare is in ~ this hole. You sit here. Don't let Mr. Hare come out. I'll go to my house and get an axe."

Mrs. Goose sits near the hole. Mr. Fox goes to his house.

Then Mr. Hare says, "Mrs. Goose! Mrs. Goose!"

"What is it?" says Mr. Goose.

Mr. Hare says, "There is a little hole at the back of the tree, and there is a little bread in it. I can see the bit of bread, but I can't get it. Come to the back of the tree and see."

Then Mrs. Goose goes to the back of the tree to get the bit of bread, and Mr. Hare comes quickly out of the hole in the front of the tree and goes home.

Mr. Fox comes back from his house. He has an axe in his hand. He asks Mrs. Goose, "Is Mr. Hare in the hole?"

Mrs. Goose says, "Yes, he is in the hole. Look, I'm sitting here, near the hole."

Then Mr. Fox makes the hole bigger with his axe. But he doesn't see Mr. Hare in the hole. Mr. Fox shouts, "Mr. Hare isn't in the hole! Why isn't he in the hole? Why?"

Mrs. Goose says, "He is in the hole.

" Mr. Fox says, "He is not."

"He is in."

"He is not in!"

Then Mr. Fox and Mrs. Goose begin to quarrel.

Mr. Hare sits in his house on the hill. He sees them quarrelling.

Description of ...

Description of Trigonia.

The mantle-lobes are rounded and plaited, to correspond with the ribs of the shell. The edges of the mantle are marked with white spots; posteriorly, opposite the anus they are provided with short convex appendages. The mantle-lobes are disunited throughout, not joining until they reach the upper surface of the posterior adductor, some distance above the anus.

The gills are somewhat triangular, extending backwards almost horizontally on each side of the visceral mass. Each gill is formed of three stems, fixed at one extremity, free and pointed at the other, and giving attachment throughout their whole length, on one side to depending filaments, which become shorter as they are more posterior. The filaments are formed of a tubular horny thread, supporting on one side a broad membranous fringe. I could perceive no trace of vessels in this fringe, but it appeared to be covered by an epithelium (ciliated ?).

The mouth is placed at the anterior and superior part of the animal, between two thickish horizontal lips. The labial tentacles are two on each side, rather long, lanceolate, and slightly pectinated. The anus is placed posteriorly and superiorly between the gills, and just above the posterior adductor muscle.

The so-called "foot" is composed of two portions, an upper and [8] quadrilateral (properly the abdomen), and a lower pointed part (the true foot), the two being set at right angles to one another.

The first portion is sharp-edged and slightly pectinated posteriorly, marke by a groove bounded by two folded lips anteriorly. The second portion is slightly pecitnated along its lower edge, pointed anteriorly, prolonged behind into a curved process, where it joins the superior portion.

Visceral mass.–The mouth opens by a very short œsophagus into a wide pyriform stomach, surrounded by a dark dendritic liver. The stomach narrows into a long intestine, which descends for the whole length of the abdomen, and forms one or two loops in the substance of the generative gland; then passes up again above the stomach, penetrates the heart, and passing between the two small lateral muscles of the foot, terminates in the anus.

Dear Sara:

One of my employees, Collin Powers, attended your June 6 class in St. Louis and was very disappointed with the quality of the course. Specifically, the content did not match the course outline in your advertisements. Although the agenda listed three topics having to do with conflict resolution, less than half an hour was spent addressing those issues. Additionally, the instructor’s knowledge was inadequate to deal with the technical questions from the class.

I spoke to the instructor briefly at the end of the class, and he agreed the questions and customer situations brought up in class were beyond his experience.

In light of the expectations raised by your course announcement, I think we are entitled to a refund of our $350 registration fee. A copy of that registration form is attached.

Should you need to discuss the class situation with me or Mr. Powers in more detail, you may reach us at 123-4567.
