Fill the blank or answer the question

1. Change the verb in parentheses (the infinitive form is given) to the PAST PERFECT form. Type out the whole sentence with a period. Tom (to go)before we arrived.

2. RULE: We form the past perfect verb forms by adding the helping verb 'had' to the past participle of the verb. If you don't remember the past participles, review them before you do this lesson.
I (to leave) the store before it was robbed.

3. HINT: The past perfect tense shows action that BEGAN in the PAST and was also COMPLETED in the PAST. Often we have time or limiting words when we use the past perfect tenses.
Henry (to help) the farmer for five years before he left.

4. HINT: The past perfect is easier than the present perfect because the ONLY possible helping verb is 'had.'
They (to learn) that lesson two years before.

5. REMEMBER: Some past participles are 'irregular' and must be memorized. She (to buy) a new hat before she found her old one.

1. Tom (buy) a new house last month.

2. When (they/arrive) last week?

3. She (not/understand) the question yesterday.

4. Fred (take) a lot of pictures on his holiday last summer.

5. What (you/get) for your birthday?

1. Have you ever .......... to New York?
a) flew b) went c) goed d) been

2. No I've never .......... there.

a) been b) went c) was d) existed

3. In fact I've just .......... back from there.

a) been b) gone c) came d) come

4. 4. and I've .......... at least six weeks there in the last year.

a) past b) passed c) spent d) spend

5. Have you .......... to the top of the Empire State Building?
a) flown b) sat up c) grown up d) gone up

1. You (to fly) for five hours before you changed planes.

2. HINT: If you are using the 'to have' verb in the past perfect tense, you will see the strange double 'had.' For example, 'He had had a cold before he had the flu.' This means that getting and completing the cold happened BEFORE he later got the flu. Looks weird.
We (to have) lunch before we started on the trip.

3. HINT: In your own writing, most of the time the regular 'past' tense will be enough, but if you need to emphasize the action being completed in the past, you should use the past perfect.
He (to pay) his respects to his future mother-in-law.

4. He (to sweep) her off her feet by the third date.

5. I (to have) five operations by the time I was ten.

1. They to get the bread this morning!

2. Alice (play) tennis this morning.

3. Where (you/go) last weekend?

4. I (want) to buy that computer, but it was too expensive.

5. Why (they/not/come)?

1. No, I .......... yet.

a) haven't b) don't c) not d) won't

2. I haven't .......... the ferry to Ellis Island either.

a) taken b) swam c) jumped over d) driven

3. I've just .......... work so hard.

a) looked b) seen c) must d) had to

4. though I have .......... dinner at Sardi's

a) had b) taken c) seen d) served

5. and …………..a Broadway show.
